runtime.connectionState - what connection is it checking?

Sorry for the probably simple question, but when using the API call to an ESX host in a cluster and retrieving the host's runtime connection state, what exactly is runtime.connectionState asking the ESX host?

Is it looking for confirmation of IP connection? Or an FC connection? Or something else?

I have an example where the virtual center is working correctly (logging in to the UI shows the hosts and vms for them) yet when an API call asks for the runtime.connectionState, it returns a disconnected state.

This ESX server is IP connected only (and the datastores are connected through NFS); there are no FC connections to it (or HBAs in it).

Is runtime.connectionState checking only for valid FC connections?

Thanks for any help!
